Lightweighting with KUKA robots' FSW (Friction Stir Welding)

Achieving high-precision FSW control with robots through joint research with EADS! Combining it with KR500 makes lightweighting easier!

KUKA has been conducting joint research with EADS to achieve high-precision control of FSW (Friction Stir Welding) using robots, and it is now being put into practical use! FSW is a solid-state joining method developed in 1991, where a rotating tool is inserted into the butt joint of the workpiece, softening the base material with frictional heat, stirring it, and allowing it to flow plastically to create a bond. By combining KUKA's high-performance heavy-duty robot "KR500" with EADS's developed "Delta-N" FSW technology, it becomes possible to join 3D shapes and curved surfaces, making delicate control of FSW easier. To date, applications have been advanced in vehicles, automobiles, ships, and aerospace, fully utilizing the lightweight benefits of this technology. 【Features】 ○ Suitable for relatively difficult-to-weld materials such as aluminum alloys, magnesium, and dissimilar materials, and can also join thin sheets. ○ Since it is suitable for aluminum alloys, significant weight reduction can be achieved! ○ No filler material or gas is required, and there is no need to remove excess material. ○ No spatter, fumes, or dust are generated, eliminating concerns about contamination. ○ Compared to TIG/MIG welding or riveting, joint strength is higher, maintaining rigidity.
